Our History
The Royal Vagabond Club, Inc., established in 1925, stands as a distinguished legacy of excellence and fellowship among African American men in Greater Cleveland. Founded during an era when African Americans were often excluded from formal social spaces, the Club was created by a group of prominent Black physicians, attorneys, politicians, and businessmen who sought to cultivate a space of dignity, camaraderie, and cultural pride for themselves and their families.

From its inception, the vision was clear: to establish a refined social organization where accomplished African American men—and their wives—could gather, celebrate, and build lasting relationships in an environment that reflected their achievements and aspirations. The enduring strength and longevity of the Club is a testament to the deep bonds of brotherhood and shared purpose that have defined its members for over a century.

Today, the Royal Vagabond Club proudly holds the distinction of being the oldest African American male social club in the Greater Cleveland area. Its membership has included generations of influential leaders across business, politics, and the professions, each contributing to the Club’s rich tradition of excellence. Complementing the Club is its esteemed wives’ auxiliary, affectionately known as the Vagettes, who have played an integral role in fostering community and fellowship.

While the Club's mission is rooted in social engagement, its members are recognized for their active involvement in civic, political, and professional spheres. Beyond local engagement, members have shared memorable experiences traveling together across cities and countries, strengthening their bonds through cultural and social enrichment. Annual traditions include a Black cultural outing in February, a summer day at the racetrack, and exclusive social gatherings, including cocktail events hosted for members and invited guests. A unique hallmark of membership is the expectation that each member hosts a gathering, creating opportunities for fellowship over fine food, conversation, and camaraderie.

The Club’s signature event—and its most anticipated tradition—is the Annual New Year’s Eve Ball, held every year. This elegant, invitation-only affair is a celebration of sophistication and tradition, featuring live entertainment, gourmet hors d’oeuvres, a formal dinner, an open bar, breakfast, and an exclusive hospitality suite. It remains a defining expression of the Club’s commitment to excellence, style, and enduring fellowship.
